Day Five Comparison - Sunset

While relaxing after a BBQ it dawned on me to take a quick snap of the fast fading Sunset.
Not the best sunset in the World but it does show a big difference in quality.

The first Photo was taken by the Nokia N8. The Camera has tried to lighten the image and this has caused lots of digital noise. If you look at the overhead power cables you can see the noise.

The second Photo was taken with the Olympus E420.
I think the difference is apparent.

I was expecting the N8 to lighten the image, true to form. I have to say I was disappointed in the grainy image.

Day Two Comparison - Snow Globe, with Flash!

I thought I would take some pictures using Flash today. I haven't had much time so please excuse the subject matter. Needs must...!

Both the N8 and Olympus had identical settings. This time I introduced Flash. The Flash was set to Manual mode. Both Cameras on auto. I will play with settings soon.

The first Photo is from the N8. I am really pleased with the level of detail and colour. However all is not perfect as you will see in the second picture which is the same Photo but with the flaws pointed out!

As you can see in this second image, the strange effect the Flash has had on the Photograph. This picture has become very two dimensional. In fact you could be forgiven for not even realizing that you were looking at a Globe!

This next image is taken with my Olympus E420. Straight away you will notice the depth in the picture. You can tell instantly that you are looking at a glass snow globe. Also notice the increased size of the shadows behind the ornament. This helps to create the illusion of depth to the picture.

It is amazing how the increased size of shadow has altered the subject of the photo and changes your perception.

If you click on the pictures they will open in a new window, you can click on them again to see them full size.

I have to say, I am impressed with the level of detail in the Nokia's picture. It is easy to forget that this is a Phone!

End of Day One - My Thoughts!

Well I have had the Nokia N8 for a whole day now. It is a completely different OS to what I am used to. I am really impressed with the look and feel of the phone. It is reassuringly weighty without being too heavy.

The Capacitive touch screen is very responsive to a delicate touch. I also like the heavy thud vibration when selecting items on the screen.
The Clock screen saver is brilliant, and doesn't seem to drain the battery.
So far I have imported my contacts from the Sim Card to the phones memory.
I have also set up my Gmail which was simple and completed in minutes.

Tomorrow I will be exploring the Menu system, and looking at Ovi Store.

I will also be challenging the Camera again. So check in to see, how I get on!

Day One Comparison - Orchids

I am still working out how to use the Nokia N8, but here is my first pair of pictures to compare.

There will be more Photo's coming! Just wanted to get some online for you to see! :-)
In these comparisons I will aim to use the same settings on each device.

The first photo was taken with my Olympus E420 Digital SLR.
Full Auto, Macro Mode, No Flash or artificial light.

This second Photo was taken with the Nokia N8.
Full Auto, Macro Mode, No Flash or artificial light.

I have tried to take the Photo's from the same angle and distance.

It looks to me like the Nokia N8 tries to over compensate the brightness, which is bleaching the subtle colour from the petals.
The focal length of the Olympus camera is more defined.
However, I have to say from these results I'm going to have to step up the challenges!

What do you think?

About this Blog

The Vodafone eForum, has set up a Device Loan Program, for members who are Level 4 Mentors or above.
The idea is to experience phones that you might not usually choose.
You then report on your experience with the Phone, in an interesting or unusual manner, before returning it to Vodafone.
The hope is to eventually preview phones before they are released to the general public.
Thanks to Tom Rushton, Community Manager, for setting this up.

I have received a Nokia N8. I will be Comparing the N8's Carl Zeiss 12MP Camera with my Olympus E420 DSLR.
Over the next Ten days I will attempt to take different Pictures in all sorts of setting's in an attempt to justify having a phone with this type of Camera.
I am hoping it will be a hard fought battle.
